Summary
WE take young people their families and carers sailing on our 46 ft yacht on the clyde Estuary . Our clients are encouraged to take an active part in sail trimming and helming the yacht.
What Core Activities sailing season 2021 did
We will take out young people and their families on day sails on the Clyde estuary on our Beneteau 46 Sailing yacht which was specially adapted to accommodate people with disability. The young people and their carers or families are encouraged to take an acive part in sail trimming and helming the yacht . For severely physically disabled we have a remote control operated through the boats auto helm equipment which allows them to steer the yacht including tacking and gybing
What Able2sailSCIO has learned
WE have been doing this since 2006 . This howver is our first year with the new yacht . This vessel was adapted to our specification at factory and is much more accessable to wheelchair users.
on our previous yacht we had to hoist clients aboard using an electric hoist slung from the boom . This was also used to hoist clients below for access to toilet facilities etc. Wheelchairs can access the yacht by a ramp over the stern and modifcations to the stair below allows us to transfer clients below in a motorised escape chair.
These improvements will enable us to take wheelchair users on longer overnight trips.
How Able2sailSCIO has benefitted from the funding
Better Breaks funding has helped us for a number of years.
Project Outcomes
Outcome
Young people and their carers will have experienced sailing a large yacht on the Clyde estuary. Young people will have taken part in dinghy sailing and will have experienced at least three days sailing with their peers (without their carers)on the 46 ft. yacht
Results
The above was largely achieved . However our targets for numbers were restricted by covid from 80 carers to 65 , and for disabled young people from 80 to 63
Case study
dinghy sailing for a group of between 10 and 14 young peoplehas allowed the participants to gell as a group and cement friendships amongst that group
Outcome
Trips on the 46ft yacht include the disabled young person and their carers . they have the opportunity to sail the yacht in one of the best sailing areas in the world and to operate as a team rather than their usual roles of carer / young person
Results
This outcome was achieved in all of our trips
Case study
One severely disabled young person who is non verbal and ventilated 24 hrs per day came on board with his team of carers . the young person was beaming from start to finish and by using the remote with a little help from his carers was in charge of steer the yacht . he was delighted
Outcome
in some cases the carer will not accompany the young person on the sailing trip and will take the opportunity for a day out on their own. A days respite from their caring role is invaluable to a long term carer.
