The importance of short breaks and respite for sustaining caregiving relationships is acknowledged in international policy (Euro Carers, 2018; International Alliance of Carer Organizations, 2021). This is particularly relevant for caregiving relationships involving degenerative conditions, such as dementia. However, there is limited understanding of how the break needs of unpaid carers change in response to the progressive nature of dementia and how these needs are effectively supported. Gaining a better understanding of the temporal aspect of short break needs can inform the planning, commissioning, or improvement of services and support systems to enable carers to have a life alongside their caregiving responsibilities.

The purpose of this webinar is twofold. Firstly, it aims to share some of the findings from a study exploring the evolving break needs of spousal carers for individuals with dementia. Findings shed light on how break needs change over time in response to various acute and gradual shifts in the caregiving relationship.

Secondly, the webinar seeks to discuss the potential value of a short break toolkit that illustrates and examines the dynamic and changing nature of break needs and preferences in dementia caregiving relationships. Through group discussions and break out activities, there will be the opportunities to consider the implications and practicality of such a toolkit for professionals, unpaid carers, and individuals living with dementia to support them in their understanding of or planning for short breaks.

This webinar is being hosted by Shared Care Scotland on behalf of the UK Short Breaks Research and Practice Development Group. Our thanks to Maria Caulfield and Diane Seddon (Bangor University) for hosting this event.
